Shades of blue

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, but I’d like to rewind a little and take a look at last Friday’s new moon in Aquarius. It marks a new lunar year, that of the Wood Dragon (we’ll get into that element this spring), and it’s a time of celebration around the world. I have a habit of setting intentions with the new moon, and the Lunar New Year offers a moment to think about what I want to bring into the next year.

I haven’t gotten to my habitual tarot spread and meditation, but they’re coming. I’ve been too busy diving into a new crochet project, which will be gracing my table once it’s finished. I chose pink and purple for obvious reasons, and I knelt on the floor arranging skeins in front of me until I found two more colours that complemented them. It took a couple dozen rows of work before I recognized that I’d inadvertently chosen a dark and a light shade of blue.

Water’s colours are dark blue and black, and these contrasting blues bring to mind the yin and yang. The water phase pairs two meridians, those of the bladder and the kidney. We can think of the lighter shade as representing the yang meridian (bladder) while the darker shade represents the yin meridian (kidney). I chose a chevron pattern because I thought it would be easy and visually interesting, and I find it enhances the water imagery and gives a feeling of rippling or flowing downward.

It’s too early to hope that all the snow will melt and trickle into drains and grates, but there have been a handful of sunny days lately that have enticed me outside and made it easy to enjoy walks. Spring feels just around the corner, and I want to shake off the chill of winter and move into the year. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for the first buds and shoots, which will lead us into discussion of the Wood Phase.

Back to Valentine’s tomorrow. No matter your situation, there is one person you can always pay special attention to. Find a way to celebrate yourself with a stretch, a favourite treat or outing, maybe a full-blown date with yourself. I’m taking huge comfort in podcasts and TV while I crochet on the sofa for solo time, and I’m having a special supper with my partner tomorrow.

You can also book a massage for yourself or a loved one if you’re looking for more ways to mark the holiday. Use code VALENTINE24 before March 1, 2024 for 50% off your next session. Come for relaxation, for maintenance, or to reconnect with your body.
