The weather once again reminds us that winter is not quite done, continuing a strange and chaotic limbo between the seasons. It can be difficult for our bodies to catch up to what’s happening outside, only for it to change again, leaving us discombobulated. Instead, let’s focus on the counterpoint between the elements of Water and Wood.
Wood is the phase of spring and is characterized by new growth, shoots and sprouts, and the colour green. As it follows Water in the generative cycle of the Wuxing, their relationship is simple: Water nourishes Wood in the proper amounts. Too little can leave plants struggling to survive, and too much will drown them.
What is most important to you when beginning a new cycle? What signs of spring (and of Wood) can you already see manifesting around you? Where do you find it in your home or work space; do you keep plants around (and do you recognize that nourishing them also nourishes you?).
Though the calendar says spring begins March 19th, I can already see new growth on the trees around my home. My eyes are peeled for the first shoots poking up from the earth and grass regaining its colour. I look forward to seeing buds on branches, and eventually spending a day among the trees once they have enough shade to offer.
As we transition into spring, think about how you would like to unfurl yourself as the year progresses. Do you have movement goals for the warmer weather? Would you like to tune into your body more often? How are you carrying forward the Water of winter into the green Wood of spring?
