Smaller acts of love

I have a curious nature, and it can be very difficult for me to redirect my energy away from learning as much as I can about all of the things now please. Lately, I’ve had to put a lot more effort into keeping my attention on my immediate circle: my body, the home around me and the people I share it with, and the nearby places I am willing to walk to when the wind makes it feel like -15.

I want to validate anyone’s desire to hermit right now. Getting comfortable in our space is sometimes all we have the energy to do, and that is beyond okay. I am trying to notice the change I can effect here: washing a load of laundry, putting away clean dishes, clearing away clutter. Each of these is an act of love, and an act of preparation, making the space or tools ready for life again.

We can focus these acts of love on our bodies as well: a hot bath or shower, a deep slow stretch after a long day, or pressing a thumb into a spot of tension. I’m noticing my own stretching practice has lapsed this winter, and I’m recontextualizing that thought as an invitation to revisit it. When my mind’s hamster wants to chew up all the information that makes me feel worse, I am trying to awaken my body’s slinking cat (complete with exaggerated yawn).
