Provided that the weather cooperates, summer is an excellent time to get moving in a lot of different ways. I’ve done a ton of walking, but I’ve been a bit less active on bixis and I feel myself lacking* in other movement as well, such as stretching and strength training. When I’m lacking time to plan for multiple ways of moving my body, I’ll bring it back down to simple and easy. What’s easier than letting someone else do the work?
*“Lacking” according to whom? Me! Based on how my body feels, and how I feel I want to move it.
It seems to be that professionals are the worst at following their own advice, and my life as a massage therapist is no different. I’m pretty decent at hydration (thanks to frequent pitchers of sweet tea in the hot season), but I truly mean it when I tell my clients, “None of us stretch as much as we’d like to.” It’s the same with massage; I know off the top of my head how often I’d like to receive bodywork myself: every two weeks. I end up getting worked on every few months.
tl;dr we are ALL susceptible to the trap of de-prioritizing our care. How do I do it? I tell myself that everything’s fine, I can still move, I’m able to perform massage. Yeah, I should stretch more, but my muscles aren’t even that stiff. And then the reasons sort of snowball until I forget that it’s even possible to just book an appointment, lie on a table, and let a professional do their work.
Movement can be a marathon, or playing a sport, or going for a brisk walk. Movement can also be the increased circulation and range of motion that comes after having our soft tissues worked. I’ve been getting more frequent massage lately, and I feel lighter while walking, I feel less bothered by tight calves and a weirdness in my shoulder, and bigger movement feels easier and more enjoyable because of restored motion at a smaller scale.
I’m a mutual support kind of person, so I generally prefer to arrange exchanges with practitioners I know, and then it’s a game of Adults Comparing Schedules. I make it easier for you with my calendar, so grab your next appointment and use July’s promo code if you haven’t already. I will be unavailable from August 1st to the 12th, and otherwise I am in town and available until my days fill up.
Stay cool, protect your skin from the sun, and move the way you want to this summer!
